Candy Patterns

In coming up with Valentine's Day Candy posts, my class decided to use the candy I brought to try a different type of lesson, focusing on patterns.

Students were given these items, which were different shapes.  Students had to identify the shape and then create their own pattern.  And of course, students got to eat everything that they didn't use.

These are the patterns that my students created:

Standards Used:

CCSS.Math.Content.4.OA.C.5

Generate and analyze patterns.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

  1. Courtney- I love this idea! We often forget how important being able to recognize patterns are. We use patterns in math and life all the time and it's important for our younger students to learn this now, so they can apply it to further mathematics- especially as the math becomes more difficult. Plus who doesn't love doing an activity with food!

  2. Courtney- Patterns are such an important topic. Not only is it useful towards math but it also in useful in our everyday life. I love how you students came up with different unique patterns that represented them. We often don't allow children to be expressive and choose for them. So i love the fact that they were given the chose to express a pattern of their own. The students were even able to get the goodies that they did not use so that was a bonus for them as well. Thanks for sharing your idea from your classroom.

  3. Courtney I love your patterns idea. Always giving students the same manipulatives to do to create different types of patters, can sometimes be boring for students. Giving them new objects that not only stimulate there minds, but there sense of smells and taste buds is a great incentive to get students to create patterns.
